A border crossing with a child is the same queue as without one, plus a few separate rules that are easy to miss, plus three or four hours that need filling. Below is only what concerns children. The general document list for all passengers is in [Documents for crossing the border](/en/porady/dokumenty); this page adds to it rather than repeating it.

Rules for the martial-law period change more often than anything else, so this page is dated: **2 September 2026**. Check the primary source before you leave.

## The child's documents: three things they ask for

1. **The child's own passport.** An entry in a parent's passport does not work for crossing the border; a child of any age travels on their own document. For visa-free travel it must be biometric.
2. **Birth certificate.** It is asked for to confirm that the adult alongside is the mother or father. The original, not laminated: a border guard may send a laminated document for extra verification.
3. **Proof of authority** if the child is not travelling with a parent. Which relatives may take a child out without separate consent during martial law is tabulated in the documents guide: a parent, grandparent, adult sibling, step-parent without consent; anyone else with a certified statement.

The source of the rules is the [State Border Guard Service](https://dpsu.gov.ua/). If your situation does not fit the table (a child under guardianship, changed surnames, a father abroad), do not rely on forums: ask the border service in advance.

## Different surnames for parent and child

This is the most common cause of delay. If the mother's surname on the child's birth certificate differs from the one in her passport (marriage, remarriage), the border guard cannot link the two documents without a third. Bring the marriage certificate or the name-change certificate. It is not on the mandatory list, but without it the check takes longer.

## Fingerprints in EES: children under 12

Since autumn 2025 the EU registers third-country nationals in the Entry/Exit System: a photo and fingerprints at the first crossing. Children have an exception: **no fingerprints are taken from children under 12**, only a photo. From 12 a child gets a full record like an adult.

In practice, the first crossing after the system's launch takes longer for everyone, and a family with two children goes through four registrations instead of one. How the system works and what to expect at the kiosk is covered in [EES and ETIAS](/en/porady/ees-etias).

## Child seats: the rule depends on the country

In Ukraine and its neighbours the requirement is tied to height, not just age, and the thresholds differ:

| Country | Child restraint mandatory |
|---|---|
| Ukraine | under 12 years and under 145 cm |
| Poland | under 150 cm |
| Slovakia | under 150 cm |
| Hungary | under 150 cm |
| Romania | under 135 cm |

These are national road-traffic rules; the fine comes from the police abroad, not from the border guard. The simplest rule: a seat that meets the strictest standard on the route works everywhere. A child who already rides without a seat in Ukraine still legally needs one in Poland until 150 cm.

On a bus no seat is needed, but the child occupies a separate place and needs a separate ticket.

## Baby food and medicines

The general ban on bringing meat and dairy into the EU has an exception for children. Under Commission Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/2122 you may bring **up to 2 kg** of powdered infant milk, infant food and special food required for medical reasons, provided the products are in their original branded packaging, the packaging is unbroken and they do not need refrigeration before opening.

Carry the child's medicines in their original packaging. For prescription drugs have the prescription or a doctor's note: it is rarely asked for, but when it is, medicines without paperwork can be confiscated. Allowances for everything else, including what you can bring back into Ukraine, are in [Customs allowances](/en/porady/mytni-normy).

## How many hours to plan for

By our data for the last 60 days, the daytime exit queue at the largest Polish crossings is 40–50 cars, which at their pace means three to four hours in the car before processing even starts. Add processing itself, which has become longer with EES registration for every family member. At the small Transcarpathian crossings there is often no daytime queue at all.

Practical consequences:

- **Water and food for four hours**, not "we'll eat after the border". The queue stands on the road, and there are usually no shops on it.
- **Toilets.** There are almost none in the waiting zone before the checkpoint; they exist inside the checkpoint area. With a small child this is the main argument for a small crossing with a zero queue.
- **Fuel.** Three hours in the queue with the engine running in winter or the air conditioning in summer takes a visible bite out of the tank; fill up on the approach.
- **Leaving at night.** The child sleeps, the queue is shorter. But at the big Polish crossings the queue only drops at 04:00–06:00, not at midnight; where and when night really helps is calculated in [Night or day](/en/porady/nich-chy-den).

## On foot or by bus

If you are not driving, crossing on foot with a child is often simpler: the pedestrian queue moves differently from the car queue, and at Shehyni – Medyka it is a well-worn route with transport on both sides. Mali Selmentsi – Veľké Slemence on the Slovak border is a pedestrian and bicycle crossing with no car lane at all.

By bus a child travels on a separate ticket, and at the border the bus queue has its own lane at most crossings. What sets these two modes apart from the car is collected in [On foot and by bus](/en/porady/pishky-ta-avtobusom).

## What the border guard asks the child

An EU border guard may address the child directly: their name, where they are going, who the people in the car are. This is a standard check against child abduction, not suspicion of you. Prepare the child for a short conversation, and do not answer for them unless asked.

## Checklist

1. The child's passport and original birth certificate.
2. Marriage or name-change certificate if surnames differ.
3. Consent or a statement if the child is not travelling with parents or close relatives.
4. A seat meeting the strictest rule on the route (150 cm for Poland, Slovakia, Hungary).
5. Up to 2 kg of baby food in sealed branded packaging; medicines in original packaging.
6. Water, food and fuel for three to four hours of queue.
7. Your crossing's typical week on its page, so you do not arrive at the peak.

This page does not replace official sources: rules for children leaving Ukraine and document requirements are at [dpsu.gov.ua](https://dpsu.gov.ua/), food import rules on the European Commission's site, and road rules in each country's national code.
