Six crossings with very different capabilities
We publish six crossings on the Hungarian border. In terms of what each one actually handles, this direction is close to the mirror image of the Polish one: there buses run everywhere and pedestrians almost nowhere, here it is the other way round.
You can cross on foot at five of the six: Velyka Palad, Vylok, Dzvinkove, Kosyno and Luzhanka. The single exception is Chop – Záhony, which has no pedestrian lane.
Coach lanes, by contrast, exist at only two crossings: Luzhanka and Chop – Záhony. If you are travelling by scheduled bus, your real choice on this border comes down to those two, and Chop is the main hub of the pair.
That combination is worth holding in mind: Chop is the only crossing on this border that works for buses but not for pedestrians. Turning up there on foot expecting to walk across will not work.
A typical week: Saturday at five crossings out of six
The Hungarian border produces the most uniform weekly pattern on the whole site. The heaviest day is Saturday, and that holds at five of the six crossings: Velyka Palad, Vylok, Dzvinkove, Kosyno and Chop. There is one exception — Luzhanka, where Sunday is the worst.
The calmest days are scattered across the working week: Tuesday at Dzvinkove, Kosyno and Luzhanka, Thursday at Vylok and Chop, Monday at Velyka Palad.
The absolute figures here are markedly lower than on the Polish border. A typical week, crossing by crossing:
- Velyka Palad – Nagyhódos: from 15 to 38 minutes — the calmest crossing on this border
- Dzvinkove – Lónya: from 19 minutes to 1 hour 13 minutes
- Vylok – Tiszabecs: from 38 minutes to 1 hour 55 minutes
- Kosyno – Barabás: from 50 minutes to 1 hour 44 minutes
- Luzhanka: from 53 minutes to 2 hours 3 minutes
- Chop – Záhony: from 1 hour 7 minutes to 1 hour 46 minutes
The peak here is in the morning, and that is this border's defining trait
Where the Polish border builds its queue after midday, the Hungarian one builds it in the morning. Almost every heaviest two-hour window we recorded falls before noon: Vylok, Dzvinkove and Kosyno on Saturday 09:00–11:00, Chop on Saturday 06:00–08:00, Luzhanka on Sunday 10:00–12:00.
The practical conclusion is simple and it is the opposite of the Polish one: setting off early on a weekend morning is the worst option available here. The calmest windows on this border fall on weekday evenings, roughly 17:00–20:00, and in the deep night.
The single heaviest window on this border is Luzhanka on Sunday 10:00–12:00, around 4 hours. For comparison, on Monday and Tuesday the same crossing stays within an hour.
How the wait is calculated
15 minutes for the crossing procedure itself, plus a fixed number of minutes for each car ahead of you. On this border that figure is 6 minutes at five crossings and 10 minutes at Velyka Palad — meaning an identical queue clears more slowly there, simply because the crossing has less throughput.
The figure excludes document checks, customs inspection and delays on the Hungarian side. We do not publish truck queues — those are handled by eCherha, Ukraine's official electronic queue.
