How the 1–5 index is calculated
We ask our own nakordoni.eu API for air-raid alerts within 250 km of this crossing’s coordinates. The source ties alerts to raions and we place each one on the centre of its oblast — so the distance in the table is the distance to the centre of that region, not to the alert itself.
The index takes the closer of two things: the nearest region under an active alert, and the nearest tracked airborne object. 5 means closer than 50 km, 4 up to 100 km, 3 up to 160 km, 2 up to 220 km, 1 up to 250 km. If the alert is in the very region this crossing stands in, the index is never below 4 — that is the region you are driving into.
The data is deliberately not real-time: the API answers with a 1–3 minute delay, plus up to 90 seconds of our own cache. The exact time of the snapshot is always stated above.

What kind of crossing this is

Lviv region, the Stary Sambir direction in the Carpathian foothills; the Polish side is Krościenko near Ustrzyki Dolne. This is a small mountain crossing well away from the main routes, and its location explains almost everything about it: transit traffic does not come this way, because the road through the foothills is slow and winding.
By queue length Smilnytsia is one of the calmest posts on the Polish direction. The weekly peak falls on Friday evening and Saturday, but even that peak is closer in scale to an ordinary working day at Shehyni than to Shehyni's own peak. Empty hours are not unusual here; for most of the working week they are the norm.
A short queue, however, does not mean a faster journey. The drive to Smilnytsia from the Lviv side is noticeably longer and slower than to Krakivets or Shehyni, and whatever you gain at the border is easily swallowed by the extra time in the hills. A detour here is justified in two cases: if you are travelling through the Beskids anyway, or if the large crossings really are backed up for hours. For an ordinary trip to Przemyśl or Rzeszów it is almost always the longer road, even when Smilnytsia is empty.
This crossing handles: Cars, Buses.
There is no pedestrian lane here: only 1 of the 9 crossings on this border let you walk across.
Scheduled coaches have a lane of their own.
Right now it ranks 2 of the 9 crossings on this border that report data: 15 min outbound against 15 min at the fastest one (Krakivets – Korchova).
Our calibration allows 6 minutes per car here. Across all crossings that constant runs from 4 to 10 minutes, and 4 of them are slower than this one.
Hence the formula for this crossing: 15 minutes for the crossing itself plus 6 minutes for every car ahead of you. Document checks, customs inspection and delays on the neighbouring side are not in that number — we count the queue only. The full method, and what this figure leaves out →
